BJ Sosa
From an early age, BJ exhibited a natural affinity for the visual arts, with a particular fascination for the Rocky Mountains. His participation in an Olympic mural project at age eight affirmed his artistic ambitions. Following a decade in the United States, BJ returned to Canada in 2000 and ultimately resettled in Calgary in 2012. Reconnected with the landscape that first inspired him, BJ continues to explore their beauty through his work. Using acrylics and ink, he has developed a distinctive style that captures the spirit and landscape of Canada’s wilderness.

My work explores the enduring connection between memory, place, and the natural landscape. Inspired by the landscape of my childhood, particularly the Rocky Mountains, I aim to capture not only their visual form but the emotion and energy they evoke. I blend realism with abstraction to convey the movement, light, and atmosphere of Canada’s wilderness. Each piece is both a study of nature’s complexity and a personal reflection on returning home—an expression of how landscape shapes identity and creative vision.
My process begins on location with a quick sketch and photo to capture the light, colors, and details a sketch alone may miss. In the studio, I refine the drawing and transfer it to canvas, beginning with an underpainting before layering final colors. I finish by outlining with black ink, adding trees, signing, and sealing the work with four coats of varnish for protection.
