Emily Carriere
Emily Carriere’s mixed media artworks feature intricately cut and layered abstract forms that evoke a sense of familiarity, tension, and subconscious meaning. Juxtaposing organic and symmetrical shapes, traditional and commercial materials, and both digital and hand-crafted techniques, her work occupies an ambiguous space between the natural and the artificial. The resulting compositions feel alluring, eerie, and psychologically charged, reminiscent of Rorschach blots, petri dishes, or otherworldly specimens. Carriere invites viewers to project their own perceptions onto these forms, treating abstraction as a mirror that reveals personal associations, emotional responses, and the edges of the subconscious.

I begin with intuitive pen-and-paper drawings inspired by biology, cell structures, architecture, and the underlying forms found in the world around us. These drawings are scanned and converted into vectors, which I layer, mirror, or integrate with the originals to build new compositions. I also incorporate my watercolour paintings, photographing and printing them on clear or opaque vinyl. Each piece is constructed on clear plexiglass, with elements applied to both the front and back surfaces. The work is then sealed in glossy resin, creating depth and cohesion before the hanging hardware is added.
