Steph Cloutier

Steph Cloutier is a francophone multidisciplinary artist in Toronto working in textiles, paper, and sculptures. Her practice explores themes of memory, belonging, reciprocity, and repair. Keen to explore materiality, her process work includes dyeing thread, and making her own inks and paper to create 2D and 3D artworks. Her current body of work looks at her fascination with patterns and textures found in urban landscapes, both real and imaginary. Steph received her BFA with Distinction in Sculpture and Installation from OCAD University and has exhibited her work locally and nationally. She has been awarded residencies in Toronto, Canada and Naples, Italy.

My thread drawings reflect an interest in layering, altered perspectives, and the transient nature of experience. In my current work, I examine themes of belonging and memory, informed by past travels and urban environments. Through layered thread, I move away from accurate representations of cityscapes toward reimagined, speculative forms, constructing new structures and spatial relationships that evoke both architecture and history. These works draw from patterns of colour, scale, and repetition, forming abstract topographies that express the search for a sense of place within complex and busy landscapes. My process involves materials that are intentionally mutable: I hand-embroider each piece, dye the thread, and produce my own pigments. These elements contribute to an ethereal quality, allowing the work to shift subtly over time. Hand-stitching is a slow, meditative practice through which I explore tension, structure, and the physical act of mark-making in thread.
